A “young carer” is anybody from the age of 8—19yrs who is living with and looking after somebody who has a long term illness, a physical disability or a mental health problem.
Our young carers service in Milton Keynes aims to provide opportunities for such children that otherwise may not have access to them due to their caring role and responsibilities. Where possible we may involve other agencies to reduce or eliminate a caring role that may be inappropriate for a young person.
We also provide support to meet young carers’ emotional needs and advocate on the young person’s behalf to provide a ‘voice’ for young carers who don’t feel they have the power to speak for themselves.
Our young carers in Milton Keynes can be affected by their role in a number of ways such as: emotional difficulties, having to grow up too quickly, bullying, anger and anxiety issues, social isolation, low school attendance and low self esteem.
We fully recognise and acknowledge the positive effects of caring for someone, even from a young age. We try to build on these positive aspects, while working with families to try and reduce any negative effects.
